Among these esteemed businesses is the English Ladies Co., a proud resident of Stoke-on-Trent. Founded by former CEO, Prestige Product Developer and Master Painter from Royal Doulton, the English Ladies Co. is known for its exquisite quality in fine china figurines, teaware and collectibles that blend traditional craftsmanship with modern elegance. The founders’ experience at Royal Doulton (under lines including Bunnykins, Minton, Waterford Crystal & Royal Albert) has greatly influenced their dedication to producing premium, beautifully crafted pieces that are cherished by collectors worldwide.
Stoke-on-Trent, known as the Staffordshire Potteries, played a crucial role in Britain’s industrial revolution starting in the 18th Century. Due to its abundant clay deposits and skilled artisans, Stoke-on-Trent’s prominence in the ceramics industry was heralded. Generations of skilled potters and craftsmen honed their expertise, ensuring high-quality craftsmanship, which encouraged businessmen such as Josiah Spode & Josiah Wedgewood to embrace innovation. This led to the development of bone china, allowing the manufacture to meet changing consumer demands. Stoke-on-Trent’s global reputation was fuelled by market demand for fine china and decorative pottery, which was soon collected globally.
The World Craft City designation highlights the global recognition of Stoke-on-Trent as a centre for exceptional craftsmanship. For the English Ladies Co., this acknowledgment reinforces their commitment to preserving the art of fine china making while innovating to keep the tradition alive and thriving. The city’s status as a World Craft City not only celebrates its historical significance but also encourages future growth and innovation in ceramics.
Last year (2023), the English Ladies Co was invited to take part in a British Trade Mission to South Korea, showcasing their bespoke business amongst other companies of all industries that continue to carry British trademark. This event was an honour to be involved in, as a small business of just 5 employees, and production quantities of only 300 pieces a time, the English Ladies Co was proud to be recognised as a brand that represents contemporary British artistry.
Stoke-on-Trent’s ceramics industry continues to leave a lasting legacy. While the heyday of mass production has waned, the city remains a hub for artisanal pottery, fine china, and artistic ceramics. Independent studios thrive, preserving traditional techniques and creating contemporary designs. The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery showcases the city’s heritage, and annual events like the British Ceramics Biennial celebrate innovation. Stoke-on-Trent’s legacy endures, blending history with modern inspiration.
